Illicit drugs worth ₦7.8 billion have been uncovered by operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command during a major raid on a drug trafficking network in Lagos, leading to the arrest of the alleged kingpin and other suspects.
The operation, carried out by officers of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) in collaboration with divisional detectives, followed months of intelligence gathering and surveillance coordinated under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Moshood Olohundare Jimoh.
It was gathered that police operatives stormed an apartment located inside an estate in the Mende area of Maryland, Lagos, where hundreds of bags of suspected Canadian Loud were reportedly recovered.
The alleged kingpin, identified as 41-year-old Eke Henry Ifeanyi, was arrested during the raid alongside other suspects.
AIG Jimoh, who addressed journalists at the scene, disclosed that the suspect allegedly offered a ₦500 million bribe to the SPU commander in a bid to stop the operation and enable him to contact associates to move the consignment, “but the offer was immediately rejected and officially documented as part of ongoing investigations.”
Jimoh said the operation highlighted the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the deployment of specialised police units to grassroots operations, noting that the exercise involved rapid containment strategies, coordinated surveillance, and professional conduct by the officers involved.
Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, said the success of the operation validates the ongoing redeployment of personnel to divisions and specialised units across Lagos and Ogun states.
He said, “Policing must be close to the people, and our specialised units must work side by side with divisional teams on the ground.”
He commended the professionalism displayed by the SPU commander in rejecting the alleged bribe and following due process.
The police authorities said exhibits recovered during the operation have been documented and would be presented in court, while investigations continue to track other members of the syndicate.
