AfCFTA: Nigeria Must Accelerate Ports Modernisation to Lead Regional Sea Trade — Dantsoho
By Raheem Ibrahim
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has called for the urgent acceleration of port modernisation efforts as Nigeria positions itself to take full advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Dantsoho made this assertion while presenting a paper at the AMJON 2026 Annual Conference in Lagos, stressing that the transformation of the nation’s ports is no longer optional but a strategic economic necessity.
According to him, although Nigeria enjoys a natural geographic advantage as a maritime gateway to West and Central Africa, global competitiveness in the AfCFTA era will depend largely on the efficiency, innovation, and reliability of port operations. He added, “Port modernisation is not merely an infrastructure project; it is a national economic priority.”
He further highlighted key reforms being driven by the Authority, including infrastructure upgrades at Apapa and Tin Can Island ports aimed at boosting capacity, improving berth productivity, and reducing vessel turnaround time. He also noted that the development of deep seaports, particularly Lekki Port, is expanding Nigeria’s trade capabilities.
On digital transformation, Dantsoho revealed that the NPA is advancing the Port Community System and supporting the implementation of the National Single Window to enhance stakeholder integration, reduce delays, and improve transparency.
He stressed ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency through faster cargo clearance processes, reduced dwell time, and enhanced connectivity via rail links, inland dry ports, barging operations, and export corridors.
According to him, the Authority is also focused on attracting private sector investment and strengthening strategic partnerships to ensure sustainable growth in the maritime sector.
He remarked, “With sustained commitment and collaboration among stakeholders, Nigerian ports are on course to becoming a preferred gateway for trade in West Africa and a major driver of economic diversification.”

Meanwhile, Ambassador Prevail Farida Ahmed called for global peace and unity among nations as a foundation for enabling free trade.
Delivering her goodwill message at the conference, the humanitarian entrepreneur and global advocate for peace urged all sectors of the economy to embrace unity and conduct their activities in peace and harmony, while also encouraging a culture of charity.
