No fewer than four students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been hospitalized after sustaining varying degrees of injuries when a section of the Amphitheatre in Oduduwa Hall collapsed during lecture hours.
As gathered, of the injured students, two were said to have sustained life threatening injuries and were receiving medical care from experts at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC).
The building partially collapsed at about 12 pm during a heavy rainfall experienced on Thursday across southwest states.
It was learnt that the students were inside the building receiving their lecture when the building caved in and inflicted injuries on them.
Confirming the accident, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, stated that efforts were ongoing to ensure injured students received adequate medical attention.
Bamire, in a statement released after the collapsed structure by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed that the Chief Medical Director (CMD) for OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi, has been mandated to ensure each student receives adequate medical care.
According to the statement, “The torrential rainfall of early Thursday morning, accompanied with a whirlwind, which started as students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, were having a lecture, SER to be precise, in the Amphitheatre of the Oduduwa Hall, affected the ceiling of the Amphitheatre as it fell off and injured a few of the students”.
To ensure better medical care, the Vice chancellor followed two other students, whose cases demanded more medical attention to the OAUTHC.
The Vice-Chancellor has, therefore, appealed for calm and urged students and staff to go about their academic and administrative activities without any form of untoward action.
The management of the University, has sealed off the amphitheatre, the venue of the unfortunate incident, until further notice.
