JUST IN: Governor Rotimi Akeredolu Is Dead
Governor of Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria, Rotimi Akeredolu is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Presidency confirmed Akeredolu’s demise and an official statement will be released soon.
Akeredolu, who became the Governor of Ondo in 2017, had announced his decision to embark on a medical leave on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, as a follow-up to his treatment and also handed over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Aiyedatiwa will be sworn-in as the Governor following the death of Akeredolu.
The deceased had previously embarked on three-month medical leave in Germany and returned to Nigeria to Nigeria on September 7.
After his return, he worked from Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, a working scenario that led to a political crisis in the State as Akeredolu’s loyalists clashed with his deputy.
There were also attempts to impeach the deputy Governor before and after Akeredolu’s return to Nigeria at that time before the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
Also, there were claims that Akeredolu’s signature was forged on official documents due to his absence at that time.
Born on 21 July 1956, Akeredolu was a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and president of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2008.
