Lagos Disburses ₦40m to Families of Fallen LASTMA Officers, Honours Sacrifice and Service

The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦40 million as consolatory assistance to families and dependants of deceased officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), reaffirming its commitment to compassion, institutional responsibility and the enduring recognition of sacrifice.

The presentation ceremony, held on Tuesday at the LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, was coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa. A total of 20 beneficiary families received ₦2 million each as a gesture of solidarity and support from the state government.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Giwa stressed that the financial assistance should not be viewed as compensation for the loss of life, noting that no amount of money can equate to the value of human life. He explained that the intervention represents a symbolic and tangible acknowledgement of the bravery, dedication and ultimate sacrifice of LASTMA officers who died in the line of duty.

He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s resolve to preserve the memory of the fallen officers and to ensure that their families are not abandoned in the aftermath of their loss. According to him, the gesture reflects the people-centred philosophy of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration and its strong commitment to the welfare of public servants and their dependants.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, commended the state government for embedding empathy and humane values into governance. He said the initiative reinforces public confidence in government institutions and serves as reassurance to serving officers that dedication and sacrifice will always be met with honour and recognition.

Earlier, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deceased officers as courageous patriots whose legacy of discipline, selflessness and service would remain permanently etched in the history of the agency. He expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for sustaining a governance culture that prioritises human dignity, loyalty and social responsibility.

Adding an emotional touch to the occasion, the wife of the pioneer General Manager of LASTMA, late Engr. Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, encouraged the bereaved families to judiciously utilise the funds for the education and welfare of their children, whom she described as the living legacies of the fallen officers.

In a vote of thanks on behalf of the beneficiaries, the wife of late Adeyemo Rotimi expressed profound gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his empathy and continued assurance that the sacrifices of their loved ones would always be honoured within the Lagos State public service.

The ceremony ended on a solemn note, underscoring the Lagos State Government’s pledge to uphold the welfare of its workforce and to continually honour officers who paid the ultimate price in service to the state.
