Relax Aggressive Tax Reforms, Imam Abdulrahman Ahmad Urges FG at Widows and Orphans Awards

The Federal Government has been urged to relax the aggressive manner in which tax reforms are currently being implemented, as they are becoming detrimental to the people they are meant to serve.

This caution was given by Imam Abdulrahman Ahmad, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Here and Hereafter Foundation, during the 2025 Scholars and Widows Awards held at the Alausa Secretariat Mosque, Ikeja.

According to him, there is no record of any economy in the world that was fully developed solely through tax revenue. He noted that multiple tax collections are becoming burdensome for Nigerians, making survival increasingly difficult, especially for families that have lost their breadwinners.

Imam Ahmad, however, commended the resilience of women who shoulder the heavy responsibility of sustaining their families despite harsh realities.

“Things are getting tougher. There is less money in circulation, and every essential of life has become very challenging. Majority don’t have enough to sustain themselves, especially for basic needs,” he lamented.

Quoting the Holy Qur’an, Imam Ahmad reminded the audience that trials are part of human existence, but emphasized the importance of supporting one another in difficult times.

He stressed that neither wealth nor power can save anyone from death or divine judgment, except those who use their resources to support the deprived and needy in society.

The cleric also linked corruption, embezzlement, and denial of rights to fear of poverty and hunger, warning that the decline in life expectancy in Nigeria—as revealed by the Bureau of Statistics—was due to multifaceted challenges confronting the nation.

Imam Ahmad further noted that even the wealthy now live in fear due to rising insecurity.

Advising the Foundation’s scholars, he assured them that beneficiaries who graduate with First Class honours would be supported with job opportunities, while those who perform poorly may lose their sponsorship.
