SANWO-OLU STRENGTHENS LAGOS FIRE WITH INDUCTION OF 150 NEW FIREFIGHTERS AS OWORONSHOKI FIRE STATION BEGINS OPERATIONS
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening public order and safety with the official induction of 150 recruited firefighters into the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. The function also marked the commissioning and operational commencement of the Oworonshoki Fire Station, further expanding the State’s emergency response infrastructure.
The newly inducted firefighters successfully completed a six-month intensive and rigorous training programme at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Technical Training Centre, Ikeja, where they acquired the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for modern firefighting and rescue operations. Upon completion of the training, they were awarded the Basic Firefighting Competency Certificate (BFCC), signifying their readiness for active service.
Speaking at the induction ceremony, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, congratulated the officers on the successful completion of their training and urged them to remain disciplined, committed, and dedicated to continuous learning as they commence their practical field internship.
She emphasized that firefighting is a highly demanding profession that requires courage, professionalism, teamwork, and a constant commitment to improving operational skills in order to effectively protect lives, environment and property across Lagos State.
Adeseye noted that the induction represents the third phase of strategic recruitment under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The first batch of 100 firefighters was recruited in December 2020 during the COVID-19 era, followed by the whopping record recruitment of 435 personnel in May, 2022. The latest intake of 150 firefighters, recruited in December 2025, brings the total number of personnel recruited under the present administration to 685, significantly boosting the operational capacity of the Agency.
She further stated that the operationalisation of the Oworonshoki Fire Station marks another milestone in the State Government’s commitment to improving preparedness and emergency response coverage. The development increases the number of public fire stations constructed by the Sanwo-Olu’s Administration to 11, with an additional station operating under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with the Startimes Estate Community Development Association (CDA).
The Controller General commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering investment in emergency management, describing the continuous recruitment of firefighters, expansion of fire stations, and provision of modern firefighting equipment as clear demonstrations of the administration’s resolve to build a safer and more resilient Lagos.
She assured residents that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service remains fully committed to delivering prompt, efficient, and proactive emergency response services while continuing to enhance the safety and security of lives, environment and property across the State.
