Surulere APC Primaries: Five Aspirants Step Down for Barakat Odunuga-Bakare as Momentum Builds

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress primary election for the Lagos State House of Assembly, the chances of one of the aspirants for Surulere Constituency I, Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, clinching the party’s ticket received a major boost as five other aspirants declared their support for her.

The aspirants who withdrew from the race and threw their weight behind Barakat Odunuga-Bakare include Hon. Dipo Jaji, Hon. Adeniyi Afolaolajuwon, Hon. Biyi Attoyebi and Hon. Afeez Odunewu.

Speaking at the official declaration and unveiling of her agenda held at The Staple on Bode Thomas Street, Surulere, the aspirants said their support for Barakat was based on their conviction in her capacity to deliver quality representation.

Speaking one after another, they collectively urged their supporters to vote en masse for the aspiration of Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare during the forthcoming primary election.

On his part, the member representing Surulere Federal Constituency I in the House of Representatives, Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, who was recently returned unopposed at the primary election, urged party loyalists to form a solid support base behind Barakat Odunuga-Bakare during Wednesday’s House of Assembly primaries.

He also appealed to electoral officials to arrive early at the various polling wards since the exercise falls on a working day.

The federal lawmaker noted that with the backing of the political class and other stakeholders, winning the seat in the January 2027 general election would come with ease.

Addressing the gathering, the former Special Adviser to the Governor and ex Leader of the Surulere Local Government Legislative House, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, expressed excitement over the overwhelming support from party members.

According to her, the massive turnout was a strong indication of victory, as she assured residents of quality representation and prompt delivery on campaign promises.

The endorsed aspirant also thanked the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, for mentoring her over the years, adding that she is not new to the political system.

The race for the APC ticket in Surulere Constituency I is now shaping into a two horse contest between the incumbent lawmaker seeking a fourth term, Hon. Desmond Olushola Elliott, and Barr. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, who has promised a fresh approach to representation in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
