Lagos Set to Launch “Produce for Lagos” Programme to Strengthen Food Security and Boost Agriculture Nationwide
With just six days to go, anticipation is building for the official launch of the Produce for LagosProgramme—an ambitious food systems initiative set to redefine how agricultural produce is aggregated, distributed, and consumed across Nigeria.
The groundbreaking programme, powered by the Lagos State Government in partnership with the private sector through the Lagos Food Systems Infrastructure Company, will be officially launched on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
The Produce for Lagos initiative is designed as a strategic response to challenges in food accessibility, agricultural productivity, and market coordination. It focuses on strengthening the agricultural value chain by linking producers directly to the heart of demand—Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous and economically dynamic city.
According to the organisers, the programme aims to support smallholder farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance nationwide food distribution through bulk aggregation. By coordinating large volumes of fresh produce directly from farming communities, the programme will cut down food waste, stabilize food prices, and ensure consistent access to healthy and affordable food for households across the country.
“This is more than a platform,” a statement from the Lagos State Government reads. “It is a transformative solution to create a food sovereign Nigeria—one that empowers food system actors with the tools and resources to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.”
The Produce for Lagos Programme is expected to attract major stakeholders from government, agribusiness, logistics, and investment sectors who will be instrumental in scaling the initiative nationwide.
The launch event will unveil key components of the programme including the Fund4Food strategy, a financial mechanism aimed at empowering food producers and investors in the agriculture sector.
As the countdown continues, stakeholders are hopeful that this innovative programme will not only feed the nation, one harvest at a time, but also serve as a model for other states to replicate.
