Obasa Stands Impeached: Youth Group Warns Against Threat to Lagos Assembly’s Stability

A Lagos-based youth advocacy group, Assembly of Lagos Youths, has issued a stern warning to Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, over his recent claim to the position despite being constitutionally removed.

In a statement signed by its convener, Comrade Lasisi Robert, the group condemned Obasa’s remarks as “an invitation to anarchy” and called on the state government to take proactive measures to safeguard the Assembly from any potential disruption.

“It is alarming that Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, despite being constitutionally impeached by 32 out of 39 members of the Assembly, still claims to be the Speaker of Lagos State. He stands impeached, and there is no going back,” the statement reads.

The group accused Obasa of mismanagement during his tenure, alleging that he misused state resources for personal gain, including amassing properties and indulging in excessive luxury, while neglecting his constitutional duties.

Citing Section 92 of the Nigerian Constitution, the group reiterated that Obasa’s removal adhered to the required two-thirds majority vote by Assembly members. According to Comrade Robert, “The Constitution is clear: the Speaker must vacate office when removed by a resolution supported by not less than two-thirds of the House. In this case, 32 members voted for his removal, fulfilling all legal provisions. Rt. Hon. Obasa is no longer the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”

The group further raised concerns about possible attempts by Obasa to disrupt proceedings at the Assembly. They alleged that armed thugs, cultists, and street urchins might be mobilized to escort Obasa into the Assembly complex on Monday, January 27, 2025.

In light of this, the group called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to ensure security around the Assembly complex and urged the Attorney General of Lagos State to prosecute Obasa for making “reckless and treasonable” statements.

“Eko o ni baje,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the group’s commitment to protecting Lagos from any destabilizing actions.

Efforts to reach Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
