Impeachment/Election: AMJON Dissolves Kelvin Kagbare–Led Regime, Elects New Leaders as Vera Osokpo Emerges President

By Raheem Ibrahim

Members of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) have unanimously impeached the Kelvin Kagbare–led regime and elected Vera Osokpo as the new President, alongside other executive members, to manage the affairs of the association henceforth.

It will be recalled that Vera Osokpo was the Vice President in the default executive under the Kelvin Kagbare–led regime.

Also, Comrade Raymond Tedunjaye, who served as the Financial Secretary of the impeached executive, was re-elected as the Vice President of the association.

The decision was taken at an extraordinary emergency meeting of the association held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the AMJON Secretariat in Apapa, following the dissolution of the Kelvin Kagbare–led regime through a unanimous resolution.

Furthermore, Kelvin Kagbare had earlier been placed on a three-month suspension over alleged anti-union activities and financial recklessness involving the association’s funds, during which period the newly elected President was appointed to act as the head of the union.

During the meeting, a member of the association raised various allegations against Kelvin Kagbare and the entire executive team and subsequently moved a motion for their dissolution, which was unanimously supported by the house.

Members in attendance at the extraordinary meeting thereafter called for elections into the various positions, leading to the emergence of new and trusted members.

The newly elected executive members are: Vera Osokpo (President), Raymond Tedunjaye (Vice President), Segun Oladipupo (Secretary), Ugochukwu Ezuruike (Assistant Secretary), Barnabas Esiet (Treasurer), Joshua Okoria (Financial Secretary), Uzor Odigbo (Public Relations Officer), Rhoda Ogunseye (Welfare), and Gloria Nwafor (Provost).

The decision followed what members described as the colossal failure of the Kelvin Kagbare–led regime and its inability to provide purposeful leadership or entrench cohesion and progress within the association.

In her acceptance speech, the newly elected President, Vera Osokpo, applauded members for their steadfastness and tenacity in the face of what she described as the poor leadership of the dissolved executive.

She called for unity, cooperation, and constructive suggestions to enhance the progress of the association.
