LSPWC Sustains Road Repairs Across Lagos Despite Heavy Rainfall
The Lagos State Public Works Corporation, LSPWC, says it has continued to repair and maintain roads across the state despite the persistent rainfall affecting road infrastructure.
General Manager of the Corporation, Engineer Tokunbo Ajanaku, said the agency remains committed to ensuring roads are safe and motorable, even as the prolonged rains have made permanent asphalt repairs difficult.
Engineer Ajanaku explains that the continuous rainfall has accelerated the deterioration of several roads, while wet conditions prevent the effective use of asphalt for lasting repairs. He says the Corporation has therefore focused on emergency interventions, palliative repairs and other engineering solutions pending the return of favourable weather for permanent road works.
The LSPWC Boss noted that Lagos is particularly vulnerable because much of the state lies below sea level, making its roads more susceptible to flooding and groundwater pressure.
He, however, said the Corporation has remained active across the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, carrying out sectional overlay works on roads including Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue.
He stated that interlocking paving stones have been deployed on Akilo Road in Agege, Ikorodu Road in Shomolu and Kodesoh Road in Ikeja, while palliative repairs using boulders were undertaken on roads in Agege, Ojo and Eti-Osa. Routine maintenance has also continued along sections of Ikorodu Road in the Kosofe and Mushin axis.
Engineer Ajanaku commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat and the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola, for their support through the release of funds, policy direction and inter-agency collaboration, which he says have strengthened the Corporation’s capacity to respond promptly to road defects across the state.
While assuring residents that permanent repairs will commence as soon as weather conditions improve, the General Manager appeals to Lagosians to protect public infrastructure by avoiding activities that damage roads, including dumping refuse into drainage channels, illegal road excavation and vandalising manhole covers.
He also urged residents to report road defects and emergencies to the Lagos State Public Works Corporation through its dedicated hotlines for prompt response.
