Financial Autonomy: Lagos Council Chairmen Credit Tinubu for Improved Grassroots Service Delivery
Some council chairmen in Lagos State have attributed the improved service delivery and execution of legacy projects across the metropolis to the financial autonomy granted to the third tier of government by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The council chairmen also acknowledged that local governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state now receive their monthly allocations promptly and without difficulty.
The chairmen, including Dr. Seyi Jakande of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA; Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA; Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu of Orile-Agege LCDA; Hon. Odunayo Oluwafemi Daniel of Itire-Ikate LCDA; and the Vice Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Hon. Adewale Momoh, stated this while featuring live on Super 92.7 FM, Victoria Island, Lagos, during the programme, The Front Burner.
The programme focused on the effectiveness of good governance at the grassroots and the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people.
The forum also provided an opportunity for the council chairmen to highlight their scorecards across various sectors, including healthcare, education, environmental sanitation, infrastructure, poverty alleviation and human capital development, security, road construction, school feeding and support for the elderly during their first year in office.
While pledging not to betray the trust and confidence reposed in them by the people, the council chairmen expressed their commitment to stronger collaboration and the sharing of ideas capable of fostering healthy competition and improving the lives of residents.
They appealed to residents to continue supporting their respective councils through the prompt payment of taxes and levies, assuring that internally generated revenue would be judiciously utilised. They also pledged to tackle cases of illegal tax collection within their domains.
Asked what they would request from the Lagos State Government if given the opportunity, the council chairmen were unanimous in calling for sustained intervention in the evacuation of refuse heaps across parts of the metropolis.
They also declared their full support for the return of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, noting that they had acquired new compactors and other necessary equipment to ensure a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
