Sudden Death: AMJON Loses Strong Member, Veteran Journalist, David Adekunle of VON

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) was thrown into panic and sadness as a result of the untimely death of one of its members, a veteran journalist, David Adekunle, who died on Sunday, 4th January, 2026, after a brief illness in Lagos.
Announcing the sudden death of Hon. Adekunle to his colleagues with the obituary issued by his family, the President of AMJON, Vera Osokpo, described the sad news of Adekunle’s demise as a great blow to his family, the association, and the journalism circle at large.
The obituary reads: “With total submission to the will of Almighty God, the family of Adekunle hereby announces the passing of our beloved son, brother, husband, father, and uncle, late David Gbemisola Adekunle, aka Honourable, who passed on to glory on Sunday, January 4, 2026.”
It stated that the Service of Songs would hold on Monday, January 12, 2026, by 4:00 pm at No. 5, Lawal Close, Abule Taylor, U-Turn Bus Stop, Abule Egba, Lagos.
The funeral, according to details released by the family, will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 10:00 am at Lantoro Cemetery, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He is survived by his wife and children.
Speaking on the unfortunate development, the President of AMJON, Vera Osokpo, described Adekunle’s passing as shocking and devastating, calling on members of the association as well as industry stakeholders to rally support for the family at this critical period of grief.
Until his death, Adekunle, who was fondly called “Honourable,” was a staff member of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and an active member of AMJON.
His colleagues remember him as a dedicated professional whose passion for journalism and warm human spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
