UNILAG Warns Prospective Students Against Fake WhatsApp Group, Disowns Fraudulent Message Circulating Online
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a strong warning to prospective students and the general public to disregard a fraudulent message currently circulating on social media, purportedly from the institution’s School of Foundation Studies.
The disclaimer, released by the School of Foundation Studies, stated that the message—congratulating individuals on their supposed admission and inviting them to join a WhatsApp group for class updates—is not from UNILAG.
According to the statement, the fake message was allegedly sponsored by a faceless organization identified as LUCID Consulting Services, which aims to lure unsuspecting candidates into a WhatsApp group under the guise of providing academic information.
The fake message reads in part:
“Hello. Congratulations on your admission into the School of Foundation Studies.
Classes start on Monday, October 13th, 2025. Join your colleagues via this group for updates on class timetables, venues, and general program information. Click the link below to join…”
The School of Foundation Studies emphasized that this message did not originate from the University of Lagos and advised all prospective students to verify any communication directly through the official UNILAG website or the School of Foundation Studies’ recognized channels.
The management also reiterated that it does not communicate official information regarding admissions, timetables, or academic schedules through unauthorized WhatsApp groups or third-party consultants.
Members of the public are urged to be vigilant and to report any suspicious messages or activities that may attempt to exploit prospective students.
