FEC Session Postponed as FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday in Honour of Late President Buhari
The special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has been postponed. The decision was made in light of the state funeral holding the same day in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
In addition to the postponement, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to honour the memory of the departed Nigerian leader.
According to a statement from the presidency signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, a new date for the special FEC session will be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the funeral proceedings.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had called for the special FEC meeting to pay tribute to his predecessor for his “significant contributions to our country.”
The remains of former President Buhari are expected to arrive in Nigeria from London by noon on Tuesday. He will be laid to rest the same day in accordance with Islamic rites in Daura.
The late president died on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.
President Tinubu has since declared a national mourning period with flags to fly at half-staff for seven days. He also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to travel to London, extend condolences to the Buhari family, and accompany the late president’s body back home.
