Apapa-Iganmu Council Shuts Aratunmi Market, Warns Residents Over Environmental Violations
The Executive Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Olawale Saliu Jimoh, has ordered the closure of Aratunmi Market along Imam Raji Street and shops around Oke Oja over non-compliance with environmental sanitation laws.
Jimoh also warned residents and youths who harass or obstruct the ongoing construction work on Ireti Owoseni Street to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
The council chairman gave the warning while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation exercise for August in the area.
He also urged residents of Olaitan Street to remove all extensions and barriers obstructing the road, saying reconstruction work would soon commence, with the contractor expected to move to the site shortly.
According to him, the road reconstruction will be done through interlocking, with streetlights installed to improve safety and visibility. He also appealed to residents to desist from cooking on the roads.
While expressing satisfaction with residents’ turnout for the cleanup exercise, Jimoh noted that the major concern raised by residents was the lack of designated places to dispose of refuse generated during the exercise.
On the proposed transloading unit, Jimoh disclosed that the council was awaiting approval from the state government because the proposed location falls under the railway corridor.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to achieving a cleaner environment and maintaining security across the LCDA.
At the proposed site for a Primary Health Centre, Jimoh said the facility, when completed, would provide basic healthcare services to residents of the community.
He added that at least six new roads had been commissioned by the council under his administration within the last one year, improving the transportation network in the area.
During a visit to Marine Beach, Jimoh was received by the Vice Chairman of the council, Mrs. Fadeke Otitonaiye, who said residents had been mobilised to participate actively in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
