Policy, Decision-Making: Women Should Use Their Potential Constructively to Support Husbands in Government – Mrs Sanwo-Olu

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has called on wives of public office holders to use their potential constructively by supporting their husbands in formulating and implementing sound policies and decisions.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) held in Lagos, Mrs Sanwo-Olu emphasized the critical role of women in nation-building and community development.

“We want to be seen as working together — women in power and women in our communities. We need to use our mouths constructively: to pray, to praise, and to speak positively, if we truly want to transform this country,” she said.

She lamented the negative portrayal of women in some media, saying, “A lot of negative things have been said about women. Many negative movies and narratives are out there. But we must change that narrative and prove that we can do better.”

According to her, women must be more involved in governance. “Women should be found in places where policies are made, where decisions are taken — not just relegated to the ‘other room,’” she added.

Reinforcing her earlier point, the First Lady said: “We want to be seen as working in unity — both women in leadership and those at the grassroots. Let us use our voices wisely — for prayers, for praise, and for positive change.”

Delivering his goodwill message, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended the leadership of POWA for their unwavering support to police families and for uplifting the welfare of officers’ spouses across the country.

“POWA brings together a multicultural community of women and plays a transformative role in improving the socio-economic conditions of police families across Nigeria,” he said. “Through your dedication to welfare, skills acquisition, health, education, and community development, you have uplifted many lives and inspired hope both within and beyond the barracks.”

He further lauded POWA’s recent achievements, including empowering over 1,000 women in Lagos, expanding welfare programs nationwide, boosting microfinance support, and initiating vital health and entrepreneurship projects.

“Your work has not only enhanced the wellbeing of police families but has also contributed significantly to national unity, security, and social stability,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, also expressed gratitude to the women for their role in supporting their husbands to serve effectively.

“You are not just wives and mothers — you are the backbone of our security. Without you, there is no police and no nation,” he stated.
