EASTER: OGUN URGES RESIDENTS TO CELEBRATE IN A CLEAN, SAFE ENVIRONMENT

As the world celebrates this year’s Easter season, the Ogun State Government has called on residents and visitors alike to observe the holiday in a clean, healthy, and safe environment.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, made this appeal in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

While congratulating Christians and all residents of the state for witnessing another Easter season, he wished them a fun-filled celebration and urged them to make environmental cleanliness a priority.

He encouraged residents to clean their surroundings, desilt drainage channels, and store their waste in covered containers for proper collection by the PSP waste operators assigned to their areas.

“All PSP operators in the state have been mandated to work throughout the festive period to collect waste in their assigned areas. This is to ensure effective waste management, especially with the expected increase in waste generation due to the celebrations,” he stated.

“In addition, all government waste management and environmental officials, along with equipment, have been deployed across the state for special Easter duties aimed at maintaining a clean environment.”

He assured residents and visitors of the government’s readiness to sustain the clean environment the state is known for, urging them to play their part during this period of celebration.

Dr. Oresanya also appealed to traders in all markets across the state to conduct their business in a clean, healthy, and safe environment—particularly now, when an upsurge in trading activities is expected.

He warned against street trading, noting that Environment Marshals will be on duty across the state to maintain law and order in all markets.

He also addressed “emergency traders,” particularly those dealing in livestock and other goods displayed on roadsides, medians, or out of car boots and other public spaces. He urged them to relocate to designated markets, assuring that there are enough spaces to accommodate them.

He added that the government would not hesitate to seize their goods and prosecute offenders for defacing the state’s aesthetic appeal through illegal street trading.

Furthermore, the commissioner advised motorists to drive cautiously to avoid unnecessary accidents during the festive period, as street sweepers will be on duty statewide to keep roads clean.

He also called on carnival organizers not to block any roads for celebrations, reminding them that Ogun State environmental laws prohibit the obstruction of roads for parties and carnivals.
