Sola Giwa Assures Smooth Traffic Flow as Lekki–Epe Expressway Rehabilitation Begins

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring seamless vehicular movement and public safety throughout the ongoing rehabilitation of the 20-kilometre Lekki–Epe Expressway, assuring motorists that the busy corridor will remain open during the 64-day construction period.

The assurance was given on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, who disclosed that robust and well-coordinated traffic management strategies have been deployed to minimise disruption and sustain smooth mobility along the axis.

Speaking while addressing operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Hon. Giwa clarified that the rehabilitation work would not involve a total closure of the expressway. Instead, traffic control measures will be strategically enforced at critical intersections to reduce inconvenience and maintain steady traffic flow.

According to him, the traffic management framework has been carefully designed and rolled out in phases, with more than 305 LASTMA officers deployed to reinforce operations across the three established traffic management zones along the Lekki–Epe corridor.

“This expanded deployment is aimed at guaranteeing uninterrupted vehicular movement, swift response to incidents and effective enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure safety and orderliness on the road,” Giwa said.

He acknowledged the growing traffic pressure along the corridor, attributing it to increased economic activities and the presence of key infrastructural assets such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery, alongside other rapidly expanding commercial and industrial developments.

To prevent traffic build-up arising from vehicle breakdowns, the Special Adviser disclosed that LASTMA has positioned a range of high, medium and low-capacity recovery vehicles, including tow trucks, to ensure prompt evacuation and prevent secondary congestion.

He further revealed that the agency will deploy drone technology for real-time aerial surveillance to enhance traffic monitoring, enable quick incident detection and support faster resolution of traffic challenges on the Lekki–Epe Expressway and other strategic routes across the state.

Giwa added that the traffic management plan includes the installation of clear directional signs, improved illumination and other essential safety features to guide motorists during the rehabilitation period.

To further strengthen operations, personnel of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) have been deployed to work alongside LASTMA officers, ensuring enhanced security and protection of lives and property.

Motorists were advised to make use of alternative routes provided by the government to ease traffic pressure on the construction corridor. Notably, Hon. Giwa identified the Coaster Road from Ogombo through Abraham Adesanya as a recommended alternative.

He urged road users to remain patient, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic personnel, stressing that discipline and collective responsibility are vital to the success of the rehabilitation exercise.

The Special Adviser also encouraged motorists to promptly report traffic incidents via the LASTMA toll-free hotline: 080000527862, assuring the public of a swift and professional response.

The Lagos State Government appealed to motorists for understanding and cooperation as it undertakes the critical infrastructure upgrade, describing the project as essential to improved mobility, road safety and sustained economic growth in the state.
