Tax Law Controversy: Prof. Nwakobia Raises Alarm Over Citizens’ Rights, Warrantless Arrests
By Taiwo Olapade
The Convener of the Country First Movement, Prof. Chris Nwakobia, has expressed concern over the commencement of the new Tax Law despite the alleged alteration of eight sections before it was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
He opined that the President should have listened to the views and concerns of citizens regarding the alleged alterations before allowing the Tax Law to take effect on January 1, 2026.
Prof. Nwakobia made these remarks while speaking live on The Morning Show on ARISE News in Lagos.
He explained that the most troubling of the eight alterations is the power granted to tax officials to arrest citizens for alleged tax offences without a warrant.
According to him, this provision should be of serious concern to all Nigerians, as it could be abused against critics of government policies and political opponents of the President.
Prof. Nwakobia stressed that his comments on the new Tax Law are not politically motivated, urging Nigerians to rise and defend their rights as citizens.
The human rights activist also pointed out that it is undemocratic for a government perceived to have fallen short in its responsibilities to citizens to impose additional revenue demands through taxation.
However, he noted that the country could experience positive progress this year if President Tinubu takes the right steps and does what is necessary.
