Mercedes Benz Truck Driver Arrested After Fatal Accident Claims Pedestrian’s Life in Ikoyi

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have apprehended the driver of a Mercedes Benz truck that killed a pedestrian following a brake failure along Simpson Street, inward Ikoyi, on the Osborne Expressway.

The tragic incident, which occurred over the weekend, involved an empty Mercedes Benz truck with registration number KRD 466 XJ. According to reports, the vehicle, which was moving at high speed, suffered a sudden brake failure near the Traffic Light Junction, causing the driver to lose control. In a desperate attempt to avoid colliding with vehicles ahead, the truck swerved off course and fatally hit a pedestrian walking along the roadside.

LASTMA officers quickly responded to the scene, securing the area to prevent further accidents and ease the flow of traffic within the busy corridor. The truck driver was arrested and handed over to security personnel from the Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi Police Divisions for investigation and possible prosecution.

Police officers later evacuated the deceased’s remains to a mortuary in Ebute Metta, pending identification by family members.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sadness over the incident, describing it as tragic yet preventable. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and stressed the urgent need for regular vehicle maintenance, especially for heavy-duty trucks operating across the state.

“This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of routine mechanical inspection, particularly of the braking systems, before embarking on any trip,” Bakare-Oki said. “Mechanical negligence and poor vehicle maintenance culture continue to be major causes of avoidable road traffic fatalities in Lagos.”

He commended the prompt action of LASTMA operatives and security agencies while reiterating the Authority’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining orderly traffic flow in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki further assured that LASTMA will continue to enforce strict vehicle roadworthiness standards and intensify safety campaigns targeted at truck drivers, haulage operators, and transport unions to promote safer road practices.

He urged all motorists to exercise caution, discipline, and vigilance while driving, reminding the public that road safety is a collective responsibility and adherence to traffic regulations is vital to preserving lives and property.
