LASG, AGEGE LGA TO COLLABORATE ON ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE GRASSROOTS

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday eexpressed to collaborate with the Agege Local Government area to achieve a cleaner, flood free and sustainable environment across the state.

This statement was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Mr. Tokunbo Wahab during a strategic meeting meeting held in his office with the Acting Chairman, Agege Local Government, Hon. Ganiu Obasa, saying the state is moving from the linear wastes system(pick and drop) to a system where waste becomes a resource.

He said the State and the Local Government must work together to tackle environmental issues in order to reduce the quantum of wastes that ends up at the landfills.

“Until there is a clear cut collaboration between the Local governments and State Governments, the same way State Governments collaborate with Federal Government, we would continue to struggle with our realities and our realities are very clear because Lagos is growing daily” he said.

He said the government is working to decommission Olushosun and Soulos 3 because they have outlived their usefulness/ lifespan as such the landfill at Igbo Elepe and others are still functional.

He said the state government has continued to ramp up its wastes collection processes saying the PSPs operators assigned to Agege Local Government are effective urging the Chairman to reach out to LAWMA anytime they require intervention in waste carting.

He promised that more officers / necessary stakeholders would be mandated to tour Local Governments to find ways to effectively support house to house wastes collection instead of people bringing their wastes to the main roads.

He added that environmental health officers will be assigned to work directly with LAWMA to support enforcement activities and also continue to support the cleaning the major routes of Agege Local Government.

He said the Chairman should identify places where illegal market activities are going on, as well as scavenging activities amongst other black spots, so that the environmental defaulters can be served abatement notices before the commencement of enforcement across Agege LGA.

He added that after such clearance of people occupying shanties or constituting nuisances, such spots could be considered for greenery and beautification based on specific request from Agege Local Government authorities.

Wahab explained that there are resident engineers attached to all LGAs/ LCDAs that manage drainage issues and flooding issues stressing that the Chairman should always reach out to them anytime the need arises.

The Special Adviser on Environment Engr. Olakunle Rotimi – Akodu expressed appreciation to the chairman for quickly hiting the ground running saying the hard work exhibited would indeed justify the means in that office.

He charged the Chairman to collaborate with LAWMA on Waste to Wealth programme saying things have to be done properly.

He added that the collaboration is necessary to map out the approved Wastes to Wealth centres in Agege so that some of it would not turn to micro dump sites as this can jeopardize his achievements in the LGA.

The Acting Executive Chairman Agege Local Government, Hon Ganiyu Obasa said the Local Government as an arm of government is a key service provider to the residents of the grassroot while ensuring a cleaner environment that contributes positively to the quality of life of the residents of the area.

He said his Local Government has held stakeholders meetings in the 36 zones of the LG to educate residents on proper waste management as well as waste to wealth intiatives in order to reduce waste going to the landfill.

He made a commitment to work in synergy with the Ministry on ways to stop major environmental infractions in the Local Government area as well as beautification of identified spaces.

Others present at the meeting includes the Permanent Secretaries, Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji and that of Drainage Services, Engr Mahamood Adegbite;

Others were MD LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin; GM LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi; Executive Director Finance LAWMA, Mr. Kunle Adebiyiand other directors from the Ministry and its Agencies.
