“Obasanjo Lied About Third Term Agenda” — Orji Uzor Kalu Alleges, Advises Jonathan to Drop 2027 Ambition

Former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of lying to Nigerians over his denial of a third-term agenda during his presidency.

Recall that Obasanjo, during a recent event in Ghana, claimed that if he had wanted a third term, he would have achieved it, noting that he successfully secured debt relief for Nigeria — a much more challenging feat.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television with Seun Okinbaloye, Kalu said he was among those who frustrated the third-term bid because it contravened the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

The former governor revealed that Obasanjo had informed him, former Rivers State Governor Dr. Peter Odili, and some northern governors about his plan to seek a third term.

He challenged the former president to explain to Nigerians why two former Senate Presidents, including Adolphus Wabara, were removed during his administration.

Commenting on the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan returning to contest the presidency in 2027, Kalu advised him to bury the ambition, stressing that the 1999 Constitution does not permit anyone to serve as president for more than eight years.

According to him, “Those parading themselves as messiahs for Nigerians in 2027 cannot defeat President Tinubu. We know ourselves; we eat at the same table.”

Senator Kalu also noted that President Tinubu inherited a challenging economy but remains committed to transforming it.

On the issue of increasing demands for foreign loans by the Tinubu administration, Kalu said there was nothing wrong with borrowing, provided it is used for infrastructural development, adding that Nigeria has not yet reached its borrowing threshold.
