Historic Milestone: Dangote Refinery Exports First Petrol to New York
By Raheem Ibrahim
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has achieved a historic milestone by shipping its first-ever Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) cargo to the United States.
This development marks a major turning point for Nigeria, signaling its transition from a fuel-importing nation to a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
The maiden shipment involved about 300,000 barrels loaded on the product tanker Gemini Pearl, which docked in New York.
Authoritative sources revealed that this entry into the U.S. market represents a significant achievement, demonstrating the refinery’s ability to meet stringent American fuel quality standards.
The landmark feat also confirms the refinery’s global competitiveness, following earlier exports of over two million barrels of jet fuel in 2025 to the U.S. and other international markets, including the Middle East and Singapore.
“Following this maiden shipment, another cargo sold by Glencore to Shell is expected to arrive in New York on September 19, underscoring the refinery’s growing export momentum and strategic position in the global fuels market,” the source added.
