LASTMA Rescues Victims, Clears Traffic After Multiple Weekend Crashes in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed its swift intervention in two serious road accidents that occurred over the weekend at Olohunsogo Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, and the Stadium Hotel axis of Ojuelegba, Surulere.

At Olohunsogo, inward Mile 2, a Toyota Camry with registration number FST 450 HG collided with a stationary Scania truck marked LSR 243 YC.

LASTMA operatives promptly rescued the Camry driver and a passenger, both of whom sustained severe injuries, and rushed them to Ademola Hospital, opposite Ijanikin Police Station, for urgent medical attention.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by the Camry driver’s excessive speeding, which led to a loss of control. The driver of the stationary truck was apprehended at the scene by LASTMA officials, while officers of the Ijanikin Police Division provided security backup. To ease traffic, LASTMA personnel quickly evacuated the vehicles and restored free flow along the corridor.

In another incident at Stadium Hotel, Ojuelegba, LASTMA operatives intervened in a crash involving a white commercial Mazda bus with registration number KRD 141 YH. The bus, reportedly speeding, rammed into the BRT lane median. The unconscious driver and two passengers were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were stabilized.

One of the survivors, Mrs. Aina Kadri, explained that the accident was caused by a sudden brake failure while the bus was moving at high speed.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the professionalism and synergy displayed by LASTMA officers and the Nigeria Police in handling both emergencies. He reiterated the Authority’s commitment to timely rescue operations, effective traffic management, and public safety.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also advised motorists to obey speed limits and ensure regular vehicle maintenance, stressing that excessive speeding and mechanical negligence are avoidable causes of road accidents.
