Constituents Praise Sanni-Eshilokun As He Gives Account of His Senate Stewardship; Presents Scholarship To 261 Students

The Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District in the Upper Legislative Chamber, Senator Wasiu Sanni-Eshilokun has presented an elaborate account of his legislative stewardship to his constituents at a well-attended town hall meeting held at the historic Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos Island.

The event took place on Thursday, 17 April, 2025.

The event, graced by top leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), served as a testament to Senator Eshilokun’s unwavering commitment to effective representation, grassroots development, and impactful governance.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of cheques to the beneficiaries of the Senator Wasiu Sanni-Eshilokun Scholarship and Education Support Programme for the 2025/2026 education session.

A total of 261 students spread across both private and public tertiary institutions in country benefitted from the programme.

The students and their parents heaped praises in the Senator describing him as God-sent man to them.

“It’s no gain saying that the cost of education is sky-rocketing on annual basis in Nigeria and for someone to come out and do this massive scholarship programme, Senator Sanni-Eshilokun deserves all our praises,” an elated parent told our correspondent.

Speaking at the well attended event, Senator Sanni-Eshilokun Eshilokun outlined an impressive portfolio of legislative contributions, particularly in maritime reform, national security, and infrastructure development. Notable among the ten bills he has sponsored are:
• The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Bill (2024)
• Merchant Shipping Act (Repeal & Enactment) Bill (2023)
• Nigerian Maritime Zones Bill (2024)
• The Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act (Amendment) Bill (2023)
• The Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority Bill (2023)
• Nigerian Coast Guard (Establishment) Bill (2024)

These bills underscore his legislative priority in enhancing Nigeria’s maritime potential and ensuring safety and security on inland and coastal waters. His inputs also extend to constitutional reform, with the presentation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) Bill, 2023.

Beyond sponsoring bills, Senator Eshilokun has taken his constituents’ everyday concerns to the national stage. A key highlight of his intervention efforts was resolving long-standing electricity issues in Surulere’s Alaka area through advocacy on the Senate floor. He also drew national attention to the environmental degradation of Lagos shoreline communities, prompting government awareness and potential interventions.

In the area of youth empowerment and job creation, Senator Sanni-Eshilokun has assisted over 48 constituents in securing gainful employment across federal and state government agencies. Eighteen individuals were placed in organizations such as the National Human Rights Commission, the Federal Civil Service Commission, and the National Inland Waterways Authority. Additionally, over 30 constituents were employed through the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency.

A lifelong advocate for education, the senator has consistently supported students at all levels through scholarships, educational materials, and capacity-building initiatives. From his early days as the Executive Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, where he launched the legacy project “My Complete Student,” to the ongoing Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshilokun Scholarship and Education Support Programme, his track record reflects deep-seated passion for academic excellence.

“Education unlocks limitless opportunities,” the Senator noted, explaining why his scholarship scheme has now been expanded to cover students across the Lagos Central Senatorial District.

Senator Sanni-Eshilokun Eshilokun presented a comprehensive list of constituency projects scheduled for implementation in 2025, in collaboration with local council chairmen. The projects cut across education, road infrastructure, power supply, ICT development, and community facilities.

Key projects for 2025 include:
• ICT projects at King Ado High School, Lagos Island; Jubril Martins College, Iponri; and other selected schools
• Road rehabilitation at Owokori Street (Surulere), Adebiyi Street (Yaba), and Igbo Street (Obalende)
• Provision of solar-powered streetlights across selected areas in the senatorial district
• Construction of Okesuna Square and rehabilitation of Ebute-Elefun High School
• Equipping ICT centres in Lagos Island East, Mainland LCDA, and more

Also announced were pending projects for 2024 such as the rehabilitation of Elegbata Stadium and the construction of Bombata Stadium, along with vital inner-city road reconstructions within Lagos Island.

Dignitaries at the event were: the Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi; the Women Leader for the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Honourable Jumoke Okoya-Thomas; the Chairman of the state chapter of the APC, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi represented by the Deputy Chairman of the party in the state; former Chairman of APC in the state, Alhaji Tunde Balogun; elder Statesman and Afenifere Renewal Group leader, Honourable Olawale Oshun; the Onisabe of Igbobi-Sabe, His Royal Majesty Owolabi Adeniyi; member representing Lagos Island Federal Constituency I in the House of Representatives, Honourable Akiolu; his counterpart from the Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency, Honourable Moshood Olanrewaju Oshun; former members of the Lagos State House of Assembly: Honourable Jide Jimoh and Olumuyiwa Jimoh and many others.

Delivering their respective goodwill messages, Prince Olusi, Honourable Okoya-Thomas, Alhaji Balogun, Honourable Wale Oshun and Oba Adeniyi all commended Senator Sanni-Eshilokun for not only giving report of his sojourn in the National Assembly but also giving back to his constituents.

“You have proved that we did not make a mistake in electing you as our representative in the Senate. We are proud of you,” Prince Olusi said.

Speaking further, Prince Olusi urged the youth to be proactive in their political activities advising them to take the bull by the horn.

“Don’t wait to be taken to any leader. Organise yourselves into formidable groups that cannot be ignored and strive to take active participation in governance,” he said.

Honourable Okoya-Thomas commended Senator Sanni-Eshilokun for his determined efforts at uplifting his constituents urging him not to relent in doing this particularly for the women folks.

The event was the 7th Town Hall Meeting organised by Senator Sanni-Eshilokun.
