Protest: Conference57 Meets, Advocates for Poll-Based Demonstrations

The Hon. (Barr.) Alabi Kolade David-led Conference57, representing the 57 Council Chairmen of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State, has stated that the organizers of the planned August 1 protest do not mean well for the country. This declaration was made during a well-attended press briefing, where all 57 Council Chairmen were present.

In his address, Bldr. Olusesan Daini, the Public Relations Officer of Conference57, emphasized that youths should channel their energy inward, focusing on creative and innovative contributions to support Nigeria. Daini urged young people to invest their efforts in nation-building rather than engaging in protests, which he believes do not offer constructive solutions to the country’s challenges.

Hon. Alabi Kolade David highlighted the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the welfare of Nigerians, as evidenced by the approval of a N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers and the implementation of financial autonomy for local governments. He also praised Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s efforts to ensure various palliatives reach the most vulnerable people in every neighborhood.

The council chairmen collectively argued that expressing grievances through protests might not yield the desired results. Instead, they advocated for utilizing electoral processes to voice discontent and drive change. They emphasized that the polls provide a legitimate platform for citizens to make their voices heard and influence governance.

The council chairmen concluded the briefing by appealing to the organizers of the planned protest to reconsider their approach, stressing that the future of Nigeria depends on positive and proactive engagement from its citizens. They believe that fostering innovation and creativity among the youth is essential for the country’s development and prosperity.
