Human rights lawyer, Malachy Ugwummadu reacts to ruling of British Supreme Court on Rwandan plan

Human rights lawyer, Malachy Ugwummadu Esq. has been reacting to the ruling of the British Supreme Court on the Rwanda Plan delivered on Wednesday the 25th of November, 2023.

The ruling was handed down Per Lord Reed.

Barr Ugwummadu said the ruling strengthens cases of all asylum seekers in all jurisdictions saying that it provides persuasive authority to refugees who are able to establish considerable irregularities or weaknesses in the refugee laws/policies of those destination countries.

According to him, once evidence exists which suggests that the refugees could be exposed to further torture or cruelty and possibly returned to countries (through refoulment) from where they fled, the law, by the British Supreme Court ruling demonstrates that such a policy is illegal particularly due to the obligations that the British Government bear under the international law, conventions and protocols.

The human rights lawyer said that this will include the European Union Convention Against Torture) to which Britain is a signatory.
