Lagos begins distribution of palliatives to vulnerable reaidents as Sanwo-Olu appeal for understanding of Fed Govt policies

The Lagos state government has kicked of the distribution of palliatives to vulnerable residents of the state as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu appealed for understanding of government policies.

The governor stated this at the symbolic flag off of the palliatives and food pack distribution to various groups at the Ikeja House, Ikeja.

The Governor said that he is aware of the challenges residents are facing due to the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Governor Sanwo-Olu however solicited the support of wealthy and spirited Nigerians to support government’s efforts in providing succour to the people.

According to him, the state government had started implementing earlier announced measures to cushion the effcects of subsidy rwmoval including 50% reduction in BRT fares
as well as commercial buses in some areas.

Another measure the state had implemented according to the Governor is the free health care sercive to pregnant women in the state.

The Governor further said and i quote ” the goal of the programmes is to reach about 500,000 households in the state as well as 250 Small and Medium Scale Enterprises to benefit. We have made use of the Social Register from the Ministry of Economic Budget and planning in ensuring those in need are reached out to”. End of quote.

To avoid diversion of the Food pack and palliatives, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed that a committee involving all stakeholders had been put in palce for close monitoring.

He also informed the gathering that the distribution would be carried out across the five divisions of the state in phases to avoid congestion and stampede.

The Governor noted that the items were sourced from markets within the state thereby boosting the local economy of the state.

On behalf of the people with disabilities, the Vice Chairman of persons with disability in Lagos State, Josephine Omolola thanked the Governor for reaching out to them.

She said they were excited with the package and wished the Governor a successful tenure.

Some of the beneficiaries of the palliatives and food packs include the Nigeria. Union of Journalists, Civil society Groups, Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigerian Union of Teachers, Youth Groups, physically challenged, Joint Negotiating Council, religious groups.

Each Food Pack contains Rice, Gari, Beans, oil and other items.
