Massive turn out as Lagos begins Fresh Food Fair at Agro Food Hub, Mushin
…Commissioner assures of sustainability, more to open in Agege, Abule Ado and Sangotedo
It was a massive turn out of residents across far and near in Lagos today as the State Government flagged of the fresh food fair at the Agro Food Hub in Mushin area of the state.
The Fresh Food Fair that runs every Saturday was aimed at bringing various food items and other consumables closer to the residents at a discounted prices by removing problems associated with the rising cost of food items in the county.
While addressing newsmen at the flag off, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya who was glad with the large turn out said that most of the transactions are captured in terms of quantity of sales and the monetary values by the vendors.
This she said will allow government to have accurate data on the volume of food items required daily for consumption and how to partner with states with comparative advantage in production of the food items.
Olusanya said residents who buys at the one stop shop stands to benefit from ten percent discount.
She explained that the process of benefitting from the Momo Agent is seamless for those who downloaded the App while buyers without such will be assisted on request at the Fair.
The commissioner described the process of providing solution to the high cost of food and shortage as a relay and not marathon adding everyone has a role to play.
According to her, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is keeping to the promise of replicating the initiative in other parts of the state adding such will commence soon in Agege, Abule Ado and Sangotedo areas of the state.
Two of the sellers at the market, Mr Adebiyi and Mrs Monsurat Adio said that the rate of turn over is high since customers are happy with items purchased.
On his part, the Principal of Ansarudeen Grammar school, Randle in Surulere Mr Habeeb Badru described the initiative as timely in response to the high cost of foods and hunger in the country orchestrated by the fuel subsidy removal.
He commended those who conceived the idea adding items sold were at affordable prices.
According to him, the state government should consider opening more of the Food Hub since people must eat daily no matter the economic hardship.
Mr Badru also disclosed that items including Vegetable, Lettuce and Lemon sold at the Fair were fresh and purely organic without the use of fertilisers describing them as well nourished
He concluded saying that students who belongs to the Young Farmers Club in the school were responsible for the items brought to the Food Fair.
He urged other states of the federation to emulate Lagos in ensuring that residents could purchase food stuffs at an affordable prices.
