By Raheem Ibrahim

The Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) has entered a new phase of leadership following the successful election of a fresh executive team to steer the association’s affairs for the next three years.

The election, which took place at the Mike Okiro Press Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, was conducted by officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos Council, alongside members of the CRAN Electoral Committee. The event saw a robust turnout of association elders and journalists from major media organizations across the country.

Out of the seven positions contested, six were unopposed. The only contested position was that of Secretary, between Mr. Niran Odufayo of FRCN and Mr. Joshua Uloko, Publisher of The Pride Newspaper.

In a keenly contested secret ballot, Joshua Uloko emerged victorious, securing 22 out of 30 votes cast.

The unopposed positions were filled as follows:

•President: Olalekan Olabulo (The Tribune)

•Vice President: Evelyn Usman (Vanguard)

•Treasurer: Chiemelie Ezeobi (ThisDay)

•Assistant Secretary: Titilope Joseph (Daily Independent)

•Financial Secretary: Ismaila Oguntade (Leadership)

•Public Relations Officer and Auditor: Taiwo Jimoh (New Telegraph), re-elected

The oath of office was administered by Barrister Yinka Sanni, who reminded the new executive members of their responsibility to uphold CRAN’s constitution, ethical journalism, and professional unity.

Comrade Tunde Olaleye, Secretary of the Lagos State NUJ Council, who presided over the election alongside his assistant, commended CRAN for conducting a peaceful and credible election. He urged other beat associations to emulate CRAN’s example.

Prior to the election, the CRAN Electoral Committee, chaired by Frank Oshanugo and supported by Funke (Secretary) and Alhaji Raheem Adeshina Ibrahim, had officially dissolved the former executive, paving the way for a smooth electoral process.

The newly elected executive members were later sworn in by Barrister Yinka Sanni, in the presence of NUJ Lagos Council delegates and officials from the Lagos State Police Command, including CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who represented CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh.

This successful transition signals a renewed commitment to professionalism, integrity, and excellence in crime reporting as CRAN continues its pivotal role in promoting public safety and justice in Nigeria.
