{"id":2900,"date":"2023-09-01T12:13:06","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T12:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenewsnow.org\/?p=2900"},"modified":"2023-09-01T12:15:58","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T12:15:58","slug":"workers-have-role-to-play-in-regional-integration-says-odesanya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenewsnow.org\/index.php\/2023\/09\/01\/workers-have-role-to-play-in-regional-integration-says-odesanya\/","title":{"rendered":"Workers have role to play in regional integration, says Odesanya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Special Adviser to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babajide_Sanwo-Olu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu<\/a> on Regional Integration and DAWN, Lanre Odesanya has urged workers to recognise their roles in Southwest Integration and development.<\/p>\n<p>He also re-echoed the fact that workers\u2019 rights fell within the larger framework of human liberty.<\/p>\n<p>Odesanya, a former House of Assembly member and immediate past secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, said trade unions have always been the cornerstone of progress in the state, region and the country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hlsraeq hlsraeq-post-inline hlsraeq-float-center hlsraeq-align-center hlsraeq-column-1 hlsraeq-clearfix no-bg-box-model\">\n<div id=\"hlsraeq-1609738-776001460\" class=\"hlsraeq-container hlsraeq-type-code \" data-adid=\"1609738\" data-type=\"code\">\n<div id=\"hlsraeq-1609738-776001460-place\">\n<p>He added: \u201cTrade Union Congress (TUC) has pioneered the ground for economic integration and prosperity across our beloved Southwest through relentless efforts and devotion to workers\u2019 welfare. The union has crossed frontiers, uniting people from all walks of life and establishing solidarity without borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The special adviser delivered a keynote address titled: \u201cUniting for Progress: Trade Unions, Workers\u2019 Rights and Development in Southwest Nigeria\u201d at the Lagos TUC annual training programme held at ASSBIFI Event Centre, Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>Odesanya said the annual training is an opportunity to hone workers\u2019 abilities and skills to further strengthen the foundation on which Southwest\u2019s development is built and formulate achievable solutions to developmental challenges.<\/p>\n<p>He said the union should continue to provide training and capacity-building programmes for workers, promote social justice and encourage policies that aid the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Odesanya added:\u201dAll these are essential for regional development. Our shared future necessitates collaboration, conquering differences and accepting our diversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrade unions are the vision\u2019s torchbearers, championing the cause of workers throughout regions and bridging the gap between aspiration and achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe belief that workers\u2019 rights are human rights is core to our existence as a state and as a region. The dignity of a person is tied to their ability to earn a livelihood in a safe and fair environment. We must continue to fight for this freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTUC must be the voice of reason, the defender of justice, and the champion of fairness in the face of hardship. We must remember that employees\u2019 rights are non-negotiable, and our Governor, His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu shares this belief by implementing policies that provide the best workplace for all of us to prosper and a favourable environment for our businesses to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLagos serves as the economic engine, a hub of innovation, and a symbol of what can be achieved when a region has a unity of purpose.
