The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has dismissed allegations by a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Timi Frank, that the Federal Government is plotting to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing the claim as grave and baseless.<\/p>\n
The council, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dele Alake, on Tuesday, challenged Frank to substantiate the allegation and urged security agencies to invite him to provide any information in his possession to facilitate investigation.<\/p>\n
Alake said the APC Campaign Council and the presidency were not involved in any plot to assassinate Atiku or any opposition figure, stressing that any credible threat to life should be taken seriously regardless of political affiliation.<\/p>\n
He also dismissed claims that security personnel attached to Atiku had been withdrawn, saying the former vice president remained protected by the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).<\/p>\n
According to him, President Bola Tinubu had recently directed security agencies to reinforce protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe security around the ADC Presidential candidate has never been compromised,\u201d Alake said, adding that Atiku, as a former vice president, enjoys two levels of state-funded security protection.<\/p>\n
He further said Tinubu had increased security protection for Atiku ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the President as \u201ca statesman and an avowed democrat\u201d who recognises opposition politics as an essential part of Nigeria\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n
Alake recalled that Tinubu spent 16 years in opposition and played a leading role in the movement that eventually defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.<\/p>\n
He described Frank\u2019s allegation as \u201ctypical opposition rabble-rousing\u201d intended to heat up the polity, accusing some opposition figures of making open letters and social media posts directed at foreign leaders and international organisations to attract attention.<\/p>\n
The APC campaign council spokesperson warned that politicians and their supporters were likely to make provocative claims as the 2027 campaign season gathers momentum.<\/p>\n
He, however, urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to be factual and responsible in their public statements, stressing the need for peaceful and lawful political competition focused on issues affecting Nigerians rather than what he described as \u201cwild, baseless allegations.\u201d<\/p>\n
