The Lagos State Government is considering the adoption of solar energy as an alternative power source to ensure a reliable and adequate energy supply for farmers across various agricultural sectors in the state.<\/p>\n

The initiative, according to the government, is aimed at motivating farmers, reducing production costs and boosting food production towards achieving food security in Lagos.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, disclosed this in a message to the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority\u2019s National Programme for Food Security, themed \u201cSolar Energy as a Sustainable Alternative Power Source for Mechanised Farming,\u201d held at Philjul Events Gallery, Oba Ogunji Road, Agege.<\/p>\n

The Commissioner, who was represented by Mrs. Aramide Gansallo, said the importance of energy in food production could not be overemphasised, noting that farmers incurred huge expenses during cultivation and eventually transferred the costs to consumers.<\/p>\n

She disclosed that the state government had already provided markets for farmers to sell their produce, adding that the third in the series of food hubs established for this purpose was recently opened in Agege.<\/p>\n

According to her, the programme would provide farmers with opportunities to learn new production techniques and enable the state to produce enough food to feed its residents.<\/p>\n

Olusanya urged participants to share the knowledge acquired at the training with other farmers who were unable to attend.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, represented by Mr. Omotosho Ade Victor, maintained that food security in the state began with farmers and other stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.<\/p>\n

He noted that inadequate and unreliable power supply remained a major challenge for farmers, while the rising cost of petrol and diesel continued to affect their operations.<\/p>\n

He, however, expressed confidence that solar energy would provide a viable alternative to conventional power sources.<\/p>\n

Fashola said solar power would support year-round farming, noting that inadequate rainfall and access to water remained major challenges facing farmers, who also required irrigation facilities to cultivate crops throughout the year.<\/p>\n

He stressed that renewable energy played a vital role in agricultural value chains and called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to reduce farming costs, increase productivity and enhance food security in the state.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Emmanuel Audu, represented by the Director of Agricultural Services, Mr. Olufemi Ogunseye, described the programme\u2019s theme as timely and relevant to the transformation of the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n

He noted that agriculture was increasingly technology-driven, adding that the adoption of modern technology would attract more youths to the sector and improve productivity.<\/p>\n

Audu called on the Federal Government to prioritise technology in its efforts to achieve food sustainability and encouraged participants to strengthen partnerships around solar energy, which he said had the potential to accelerate the desired transformation of the sector.<\/p>\n

In her remarks, the Programme Manager of the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority, Mrs. Aderoke Toju-Tubi, said the Ministry\u2019s continued support had been a source of inspiration to the agency.<\/p>\n

She explained that the training aligned with the authority\u2019s efforts to facilitate the transition from conventional farming to mechanised agriculture.<\/p>\n

Toju-Tubi said the authority was committed to addressing the challenges of providing sustainable energy for both large-scale and smallholder farmers in the state.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the agency\u2019s achievements, she said it remained determined to strengthen its mandate of improving technology adoption in the agricultural sector for the benefit of farmers.<\/p>\n

She disclosed that the introduction of soilless farming technology at the authority\u2019s headquarters in Agege had provided opportunities for stakeholders and students to acquire practical knowledge of the technique.<\/p>\n

She also revealed that the authority had established the Lagos Call Help Line, which had helped address various challenges confronting farmers.<\/p>\n

In the first presentation at the programme, Dr. Olayinka Akinola Omotosho of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, allayed participants\u2019 fears about the potential difficulties of adopting solar power on their farms.<\/p>\n

He assured farmers that he would respond promptly to any challenges they encountered in applying the technology, while commending the state government for its prompt intervention in addressing agricultural challenges.<\/p>\n

Farmers from various agricultural sites, including Ado-Badoore, Ibeju-Lekki Site 5, Ayobo-Ipaja Site 7 and Amuwo-Odofin\/Ojo Site 8, participated in the programme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
