<\/p>\nStakeholders, including professionals in the special education sector, have called on the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to wake up to its responsibility of ensuring that the curriculum for special needs education is taught to all teachers from primary to tertiary institutions to promote the success of the Inclusive Education Policy.<\/p>\n
The stakeholders also advocated the full implementation of inclusive education programmes in schools across the country.<\/p>\n

They made the call at the three day annual conference of the National Association of Exceptional Children (NAEC), held at the University of Lagos, Akoka.<\/p>\n
One of the stakeholders, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, said the inclusive education system in the country was still lagging behind and had not been effective because its implementation and teaching model had largely been left to special schools and special educators.<\/p>\n
According to her, this has contributed to the stigmatisation and segregation of people with special needs across the country.<\/p>\n
She said spreading knowledge of inclusive education would equip teachers in regular schools and lecturers in higher institutions with not only the academic skills but also the emotional and social capabilities required to support children and adults with special needs.<\/p>\n
Professor Obi also called for teacher training institutions to integrate mandatory inclusive education courses into their programmes.<\/p>\n
She further emphasised the need for effective monitoring of both private and public educational institutions by the TRCN to ensure that accredited standards and professionalism were maintained in the teaching profession.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, the President of NAEC, Professor Julius Ademokoya, pointed out the urgent need for governments at all levels to increase funding for inclusive education.<\/p>\n
He maintained that many countries around the world had reduced the stigmatisation of persons living with disabilities by providing an enabling environment for children and adults with special needs to contribute positively to the development of their societies.<\/p>\n
Professor Ademokoya stressed that Nigeria could not afford to be left behind in ensuring a conducive learning environment for learners with specialised needs.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the perception and stigmatisation of people with special needs in schools in the northern parts of the country, a lecturer at Kano State University of Education, Dr. Aliyu Jingua, said a good number of educational institutions were beginning to embrace the Inclusive Education Policy.<\/p>\n
He noted that infrastructure and learning gadgets were increasingly being provided for students with special needs and disabilities.<\/p>\n
