Local Government Chairmen across the country have been urged to ensure that the financial autonomy granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu translates into greater transparency, stronger accountability, improved service delivery, and meaningful partnerships with communities and the private sector.<\/p>\n

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Hon. Sunday Dare, gave the charge at the 2026 Annual Public Lecture and Awards organised by The Gazelle News at the Radisson Blu Hotel, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos.<\/p>\n

He said the financial autonomy should not be viewed as an end in itself but as an opportunity that comes with greater responsibility to deliver the dividends of democracy at the grassroots.<\/p>\n

Hon. Dare, who was the Guest Speaker at the event, noted that local governments were never conceived as mere administrative outposts but were designed to bring governance closer to the people, making government more visible, responsive, and accountable.<\/p>\n

According to him, the reforms initiated by the Tinubu-led administration represent one of the most consequential governance reforms in Nigeria\u2019s democratic journey.<\/p>\n

The presidential aide pointed out that by ensuring constitutionally allocated resources reach local governments directly, the reform restores their capacity to plan, prioritise, and positively impact the lives of the people.<\/p>\n

He expressed confidence that Nigeria\u2019s greatest opportunity does not reside solely in Abuja or the state capitals but in its wards and villages, where governance must be felt and prosperity must begin.<\/p>\n

Hon. Sunday Dare delivered a lecture on the theme, \u201cDriving Grassroots Governance with Public Private Partnerships: The Gains, the Pains and the Prospects.\u201d<\/p>\n
