\nThe former Commissioner of Police (CP) of Lagos State, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has been selected to receive the prestigious \u2018Best Crime Fighter of the Year\u2019 award from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Abuja.

\nMoshood Jimoh, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 2, was said to have earned the award for his outstanding contributions to crime fighting, public safety, and the protection of press freedom during his tenure in Lagos State.

\n\u200eThe Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, is expected to serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the event, which is scheduled to hold on May 19 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

\n\u200eIn a nomination letter signed by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, the union stated that the honour was in recognition of AIG Jimoh\u2019s transformative leadership and strategic policing innovations while serving as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eThe letter noted that the 2026 Press Week is themed: \u201c2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.\u201d

\n\u200eAccording to the council, AIG Jimoh distinguished himself through intelligence-driven policing strategies that significantly strengthened public safety in Nigeria\u2019s commercial capital.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eThe NUJ stated that under his leadership, the Lagos State Police Command recorded notable operational successes in combating violent crimes, armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping, cybercrime, and street violence across several parts of the state.

\n\u200eThe council also commended the former Lagos police boss for modernising operational structures within the command through enhanced K9 deployment, improved surveillance coordination, rapid-response policing, and data-driven crime prevention mechanisms.

\n\u200eIt further praised his swift intervention in cases involving the harassment and intimidation of journalists, noting that such actions reinforced confidence among media practitioners operating in high-risk environments.

\n\u200e\u201cUnder your exemplary leadership since assuming office as Lagos State Commissioner of Police, you transformed public safety through innovative strategies, including enhanced K9 operations, rapid response to media harassment cases, and data-driven crime reductions that safeguarded journalists in high-risk reporting while fostering stronger police-media partnerships,\u201d the letter stated.

\n\u200eThe union observed that AIG Jimoh\u2019s tenure in Lagos was marked by increased collaboration between the police and critical stakeholders, including journalists, civil society organisations, community leaders, and private sector security networks.

\n\u200eAccording to the NUJ, his leadership style promoted professionalism, accountability, intelligence sharing, and proactive crime management, all of which contributed to improved public trust in law enforcement.

\n\u200eThe NUJ FCT Council invited AIG Jimoh to attend the opening ceremony, where the award would be formally presented before the IGP, journalists, public officials, security stakeholders, and civil society leaders.

\n\u200eThe nomination letter was jointly endorsed by Grace Ike and the Secretary of the council, Jide Oyekunle.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eMeanwhile, IGP Disu is expected to attend the lecture and awards ceremony alongside top government officials, media professionals, security stakeholders, political leaders, and civil society actors to deliberate on the growing threat of fake news, misinformation, and propaganda ahead of the 2027 general elections.

\n\u200eAccording to the organisers, Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago of Niger State will serve as Chairman of the occasion, while former Kano State Governor and Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Abdullahi Ganduje, will attend as Co-Chairman.

\n\u200eFormer Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, is billed to deliver the keynote lecture, while the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, will serve as Chief Host.

\n\u200eStakeholders believe the IGP\u2019s participation at the NUJ lecture is timely, especially as conversations intensify around the role of security agencies, the media, and citizens in safeguarding Nigeria\u2019s democracy against misinformation and divisive narratives ahead of the next election cycle.
