A prominent socio-political group, Lagos State Prominent Indigenes, has declared that only indigenous Lagosians should occupy the offices of Governor, Deputy Governor, and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n
The group made its position known in a communiqu\u00e9 issued at the end of its Technical Committee meeting held on March 18, 2026, where it also unanimously endorsed President <\/span>Bola Ahmed Tinubu<\/span> for a second term in office.<\/span><\/p>\n The communiqu\u00e9, signed by the Convener, Chief (Dr) Adesunbo Onitiri, stated that the call for indigenous leadership in Lagos is rooted in the need to promote equity, preserve the identity of the state, and ensure broader stakeholder inclusion in governance.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the group, allowing indigenes to occupy the top political offices would strengthen local representation and deepen a sense of belonging among native Lagosians.<\/span><\/p>\n The group outlined a set of conditions for individuals aspiring to occupy key leadership positions in the state. It stressed that such candidates must be bona fide indigenes of Lagos State with verifiable ancestral lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n Other requirements include strong academic and professional qualifications, as well as proven experience in governance, leadership, or enterprise across the public or private sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n It also emphasized integrity as a non-negotiable standard, noting that aspirants must have no history of corruption or criminal involvement. Additionally, prospective candidates are expected to demonstrate sound character, discipline, and commendable personal conduct.<\/span><\/p>\n The communiqu\u00e9 further highlighted the importance of tangible achievements, both within Lagos State and beyond, alongside a demonstrated commitment to family values and societal responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the group, aspirants must also exhibit independence of thought, while maintaining the ability to collaborate effectively and lead with humility in pursuit of transformational governance.<\/span><\/p>\n The Lagos State Prominent Indigenes noted that it would engage constructively with all qualified aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections.
