The Chairman of the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE), Dr. Usman Bugaje, has warned that peaceful coexistence in Nigeria may be in jeopardy if electoral malpractice persists during the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n

He said all hands must be on deck to ensure that Nigeria does not go the way of Sudan and Somalia in the aftermath of the 2027 polls.<\/p>\n

Dr. Bugaje issued the warning in Lagos during a media briefing organised by the Movement for Credible Elections to state its position on contentious areas of the Electoral Amendment Act currently before the Senate.<\/p>\n

According to him, the Senate may not fully appreciate the consequences of its inaction if it fails to reflect the will of the majority in the amended Electoral Act. He alleged that the upper chamber has consistently demonstrated a tendency to manipulate the system for selfish motives.<\/p>\n

The MCE chairman explained that the coalition was formed to salvage the image of the country, not to struggle for power or contest elections.<\/p>\n

Insisting that sovereignty belongs to the people, Dr. Bugaje noted that Nigerians must stand in unity to prevent ignorant and criminally minded individuals from undermining the nation\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n

On his part, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said the option of going to court to challenge the actions of the National Assembly had not been ruled out.<\/p>\n

Wabba, who is co-chairman of the group, disclosed that mass protests had begun in parts of the country, while other viable options remain open to the coalition.<\/p>\n

He maintained that history calls on true democrats and progressives to sustain the current movement until their demands are met.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Labour Party\u2019s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, joined members of civil society groups in a solidarity march to the National Assembly, demanding genuine, free, and transparent elections in 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
