Nigeria on Tuesday joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, with a renewed call for decisive action against the rising cases of digital abuse targeting women and girls.<\/p>\n
In a message to mark the 2025 observance, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, highlighted the significance of this year\u2019s theme, \u201cUNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.\u201d She noted that the theme reflects a growing and often overlooked threat of online harassment, extortion, cyberstalking, and gender-based hate.<\/p>\n
According to the First Lady, digital platforms are meant to promote learning, connection and productivity, not fear. She described the increasing rate of online bullying and blackmail experienced by women and girls as unacceptable, stressing that violence in any form\u2014whether offline or online\u2014erodes dignity, endangers safety, and limits the potential of victims.<\/p>\n
Senator Tinubu expressed solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and commended institutions and advocates working tirelessly to protect women and girls across the country.<\/p>\n
She urged government bodies, especially the legislature and judiciary, technology companies, civil society organisations and citizens to take bold steps to make digital spaces safer and more respectful for all.<\/p>\n
