The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has described Saturday\u2019s Local Government and Local Council Development Area elections as largely peaceful, credible, and devoid of major disruptions, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning an overwhelming majority of the councillorship seats.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a post-election press conference held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the Commission\u2019s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, the Chairman of LASIEC, Hon. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd.), lauded the people of Lagos State for their maturity, peaceful conduct, and active participation in the democratic process.<\/p>\n

According to her, a total of 376 councillorship seats were contested during the elections, with the APC clinching 375, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured one seat in Ward D of Yaba LCDA.<\/p>\n

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile commended the efforts of security agencies for maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process, noting that their presence played a critical role in preventing electoral violence, ballot snatching, and voter intimidation.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo major cases of electoral violence or general breakdown of law and order were recorded. This is a testimony to the robust synergy between the people of Lagos, the Security Agencies, and LASIEC at large,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also praised members of the media for their professional and unbiased coverage of the elections, describing their efforts as pivotal in promoting transparency, public confidence, and accountability in the process.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging the late commencement of voting in some polling units due to logistical challenges, she noted that the Commission swiftly addressed the issues, with security operatives also responding promptly to minor disruptions in a few areas.<\/p>\n

She further admitted that voter apathy remains a concern and promised that the Commission would intensify voter education and stakeholder engagement efforts ahead of future elections.<\/p>\n

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile affirmed that the results were collated and announced in accordance with Sections 54 and 57 of the LASIEC Law 2008 (as amended), with councillorship results announced at the ward level and chairmanship results declared at the respective local government collation centres.<\/p>\n

She announced that Certificates of Return would be presented to the duly elected chairmen and councillors at the Commission\u2019s headquarters in line with Section 61 of the LASIEC Law.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the winners of this election, I congratulate you,\u201d she said. \u201cBut let me quickly remind you that this is not a call for celebration alone, but a call to service for humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

She urged those who were not successful at the polls not to lose faith in the democratic process, encouraging them to channel their grievances through appropriate legal platforms.<\/p>\n
