The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the urgent need to protect the future generation of Nigerians from preventable and treatable diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n

She made this call at the final flag-off of the <\/span>Free to Shine Triple Elimination Campaign<\/span>\u2014targeting the elimination of HIV\/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis among women of reproductive age, as well as the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event, which marked the conclusion of the campaign across Nigeria\u2019s six geopolitical zones, was held in Enugu.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe <\/span>Free to Shine<\/span> campaign seeks to significantly reduce new HIV infections among women of reproductive age, prevent mother-to-child (vertical) transmission, and ensure that every child born with HIV receives the necessary treatment and support to thrive,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is heartbreaking to know that just two years ago, 15,000 children aged 0\u201314 lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses. Each of these children was not just a statistic, but a future full of potential cut short. The ongoing challenges faced by these children underscore the urgent need for sustained action\u2014to improve prevention strategies, enhance diagnosis, and expand access to treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing the youth and students who turned out in large numbers, the First Lady urged them to avoid risky behaviors that increase vulnerability to these diseases. She also encouraged them to get tested regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHIV\/AIDS is no longer a death sentence. Treatment is accessible. Please, let us stop stigmatizing those living with the disease,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo our dear children and youth, this campaign cannot succeed without your involvement. You are our future. Yet, your age group remains one of the most vulnerable. Please, take care of yourselves and stay protected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In his remarks, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State described the <\/span>Free to Shine<\/span> campaign as both a bold and moral imperative.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will give our full support to Her Excellency on this campaign,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis initiative exemplifies what inclusion and real progress look like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking earlier, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, noted that the campaign has led to a noticeable increase in the number of people coming forward for testing and treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

He commended Senator Tinubu\u2019s advocacy as a reflection of not only her personal commitment but also the Federal Government\u2019s dedication to the health and well-being of Nigerians.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event also featured moving testimonials from people living with HIV\/AIDS, who shared how they have managed to thrive with the love and support of their families. They described stigmatization\u2014not the disease itself\u2014as the true killer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Free to Shine<\/span> campaign, an initiative of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), is being locally championed by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who has expanded its scope to include the <\/span>Triple Elimination<\/span> of HIV\/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the campaign\u2019s launch in January 2025, it has covered the North-Central, North-East, North-West, South-South, and South-West zones.
