Lagos Tourism Team Embarks on Badagry–Cotonou Tour to Boost Heritage Preservation

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, alongside the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Solomon Bonu; the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Works, Engr. Adekunle Olayinka; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila; management staff of the Ministry; and the Consultant/Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sageto Nigeria Limited, Engr. Salim Abou Jaoude, as well as other delegates, embarked on a two-day working tour from Badagry to Cotonou, Republic of Benin, from Tuesday, March 17 to Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

The visit focused on strengthening heritage preservation and enhancing tourism development in Lagos State, particularly in Badagry, which is home to significant historical sites linked to the transatlantic slave trade.

The delegation toured notable landmarks in Ouidah, including the Point of No Return, the Slave Market, and the iconic Amazon Statue, drawing insights on global best practices in heritage tourism and immersive cultural experiences.

The tour underscores Lagos State’s commitment to preserving shared history, promoting cultural diplomacy, and elevating tourism experiences to global standards.
