Lagos NLC Chairman Pledges Support for CPS Pensioners Over Pension Increase

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State chapter, Comrade Agnes Sessie, has pledged to champion the cause of retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in the state over the implementation of pension increases.

Sessie made the pledge on Friday while addressing pensioners during the Open Congress Day celebration held in Oshodi, Lagos.

She said pensioners under the CPS in Lagos deserve to benefit from pension increases just like their counterparts under the Federal Government scheme, adding that the labour movement would pursue both political and administrative solutions to address the issue.

According to her, the NLC would also leverage the election year to renegotiate a new minimum wage for Lagos State workers while advocating the implementation of pension increases for CPS retirees in the state.

The labour leader also commended the efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in managing the affairs of Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Contributory Pension Scheme, Lagos State Council, Comrade Michael Omisande, urged the Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Babalola Obilana, to be proactive in addressing the issue of pension increases for CPS pensioners in the state.

Omisande disclosed that it has been over two months since the template for the pension increase was submitted, warning that retirees in Lagos State may resort to protest if LASPEC continues to delay action on the matter.

He added that both Governor Sanwo-Olu and the LASPEC Director-General had at different fora promised to adopt the Federal Government’s template for the payment of pension increases to Lagos State retirees.

According to him, federal retirees have been benefiting from the pension increase since November 2025.

The Open Congress Day is held annually to commemorate the establishment of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS) in Nigeria on February 27, 2017.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Freedom of Association: A Fundamental Human Right in Nigeria.”
