Lagos APC Slams Peter Obi’s One-Term Presidency Claim, Calls It a Cover-Up for Lack of Capacity
The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed as “self-serving and deceptive” the recent declaration by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that he would only serve one term if elected president.
In a strongly worded rejoinder issued on Sunday, the party described Obi’s statement as a veiled admission of unpreparedness and incapacity to lead Nigeria, branding the move as a “cowardly political shortcut” to avoid scrutiny.
“One-Term Promise Is Not Integrity — It’s Evasion”
The APC contended that Obi’s one-term pledge was a clear signal that he lacked the competence, stamina, and policy depth needed to govern a complex nation like Nigeria. “Nigeria is not Anambra State,” the party said. “Running a country of over 200 million people is not a part-time project or four-year experiment.”
The statement accused Obi of employing “shallow antics” and relying on “rhetoric without strategy,” adding that true national leadership demands blueprints, courage, and long-term commitment — not exit plans wrapped in populist slogans.
“Selflessness or Political Opportunism?”
The party also dismissed Obi’s pledge as political opportunism disguised as humility. “He knows he has no viable plan to transform Nigeria, no national coalition, and no real federal track record. This one-term gimmick is just a strategy to lower expectations and preempt his own failure,” the statement noted.
“Obi’s Record as Governor: Overhyped, Underwhelming”
Taking aim at Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, the APC said his widely publicized achievements were largely “exaggerated PR stunts” with little transformational impact. “Even basic infrastructure and industrial development were neglected during his tenure,” it said. “If that was his best, why should Nigerians trust him with the presidency — even for a day?”
“Tinubu Offers Real Leadership, Not Excuses”
Contrasting Peter Obi’s “politics of posturing” with the governance style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC praised the president for his bold reforms, economic revival agenda, and security restructuring initiatives.
“President Tinubu is not making promises he cannot keep — he’s making the hard decisions that many before him avoided. That is what true leadership looks like,” the statement declared.
According to the, Obi’s one-term promise was not a show of integrity but a “smokescreen for lack of substance.” It urged Nigerians to reject what it called “empty campaign gimmicks” and stay focused on real governance under the APC.
“Nigerians are wiser than they were in 2023. We’ve seen the difference between eloquent promises and courageous action,” the statement concluded.
