FLASH FLOOD: OGUN STATE ENJOINS RESIDENTS NOT TO PANIC

The Ogun State Government has urged residents not to panic over the ongoing flash floods affecting parts of the state, describing the situation as a natural occurrence. Instead, residents are advised to remain calm and adhere strictly to all safety guidelines put in place to mitigate the impact.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, the government reassured residents that proactive measures are being taken, emphasizing the need to avoid panic and comply with recommended precautions aimed at safeguarding lives and property during this rainy season when flash floods are common.

Dr. Oresanya reminded residents to stay indoors during heavy rainfall or seek shelter in safe locations if caught in transit.

“Motorists and commuters are advised to resist the temptation to cross flooded areas until the water level recedes, which typically occurs within one or two hours,” he said.

He also called on households and community leaders to ensure that all obstructions along drainage channels and canals are cleared to allow free flow of water.

While warning that more torrential rainfall is expected over the next three weeks—the first peak of the rainy season—Dr. Oresanya urged residents to promptly contact the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) or the Flood Emergency Management Response Teams at their nearest local government office in case of emergencies.

He further disclosed that Community Development Associations (CDAs) across the state have been mobilised to serve as first responders for flood-related emergencies within their respective communities.
