NGF Commiserates with Niger State Over Devastating Mokwa Flood

…reaffirms commitment to climate action and national disaster response

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood that recently ravaged Mokwa town in Niger State, resulting in loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, H.E. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the NGF expressed solidarity with the government and people of Niger State, describing the tragedy as a sobering reminder of the harsh realities of climate change.

“We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community,” the statement read.

“We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and express our support to the state government at this difficult time.”

Governor AbdulRazaq lauded the prompt response of the Niger State Government and the coordination with emergency agencies to assist victims. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration with national institutions such as the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in delivering both immediate relief and long-term resilience strategies.

“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live,” he said.

“We commit ourselves as leaders of our people to continue to work with ONSA and NEMA to not only help our people cope with this global challenge, but to strengthen mitigative actions and relief institutions.”

The NGF Chairman urged citizens to support government-led efforts to address climate-related disasters and to cooperate with agencies currently on the ground assisting those affected.

The Forum also offered prayers for families who lost loved ones and property in the Mokwa flooding, reaffirming its collective resolve to strengthen state-level preparedness and response mechanisms against climate-induced emergencies.
