HOUSE COMMITTEE COMMENDS NEMA’S COMMITMENT TO DISABILITY INCLUSION
The House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its dedicated efforts in addressing the unique needs of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) during emergency responses.
Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Bashiru Dawodu Ayinla, commended NEMA during an oversight visit to the Agency’s headquarters on Wednesday in Abuja.
Dr. Ayinla acknowledged that, after a thorough review of the Agency’s operations, it was evident that NEMA not only understands the challenges faced by PWDs but also demonstrates a strong commitment to their inclusion. He noted that the Agency has made deliberate efforts to ensure the representation of PWDs within its workforce, as well as to provide adequate support to them during emergency response operations.
While expressing satisfaction with the Agency’s progress, Dr. Ayinla emphasized that there is still room for improvement. He urged NEMA to continually strengthen its strategies and programmes to further enhance the inclusion and welfare of persons with disabilities.
The Chairman emphasized the Committee’s concerns over the persistent difficulties faced by persons with disabilities, particularly in accessing some public infrastructure and essential services. He reiterated the Committee’s determination to work across sectors to eliminate such challenges and promote equity and inclusion.
The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, briefed the Committee on the Agency’s initiatives aimed at prioritizing the needs of PWDs during emergencies. She stated that under her leadership, NEMA has embraced inclusive emergency planning and response strategies to ensure that no vulnerable group is left behind.
The Director General NEMA also highlighted recent interventions carried out by the Agency to support PWDs in Abuja and Kano State.
She further disclosed that NEMA has established a strategic partnership with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to advance mutual objectives and enhance the overall well-being of persons with disabilities across the country.
