Biodun Coker Launches Manifesto, Promises New Era for Lagos Island LG
Ahead of the July 12 Local Government Elections in Lagos State, Chairmanship hopeful for Lagos Island Local Government, Biodun Coker, has unveiled his manifesto to residents and party supporters, declaring himself the most qualified and best candidate for the job.
The event, which attracted a large crowd, was held at the Oluwole Car Park, opposite the Lagos Central Mosque. Coker stated that his decision to contest was driven by a desire to add value to the lives of residents and promote the socio-economic development of the area.
According to him, many of the longstanding challenges facing the local government have been identified, and he is fully prepared—with the support of his team—to resolve them within a short time if elected.
He boldly challenged residents, business owners, and party faithful to hold him accountable, promising to render a report of his performance every 100 days in office.
Reflecting on his past interventions in the area, Hon. Coker noted that through his Biodun Coker Foundation, over 790 children have been trained in computer literacy, and 1,000 families have been enrolled to access free medical services for one year.
Speaking on education, which he described as a top priority, the chairmanship aspirant revealed that more than 800 students have benefited from free JAMB training. He also pledged to equip all public schools in the area with 20 computers each, to promote ICT education.
Coker emphasized that the residents of Lagos Island Local Government deserve quality leadership, assuring them that his administration will strive to produce leaders in the mold of President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former Governor (now Minister for Works) Babatunde Fashola.
He further revealed plans to launch the Irorun Scholarship Scheme and revive all Primary Health Care Centres in the locality to ensure accessible and quality healthcare.
Mr. Oladele Musbau Taiwo, speaking on behalf of the Eko Pathfinders, described the event as a historic moment, commending the massive turnout of supporters. He said Coker’s decision to contest was timely and urged party members to rally behind him.
Taiwo added that Coker has ushered in a new political dawn on Lagos Island and expressed confidence that he would fulfill his campaign promises to improve the lives of the people.
Also speaking, Alhaji Ibrahim Awalu, representing the Arewa community, affirmed their full support for Coker, stating that his emergence as a candidate was not by chance.
Mr. Festus Okundiri, who spoke on behalf of the Ndigbo community, pledged to deliver at least 5,000 votes from the Jankara, Idumota, and Balogun markets, where the Igbo community has a strong presence. He described Coker as God-fearing and a grassroots-oriented leader.
In a show of fatherly support, Alhaji Yemisi Abdulbaqi Coker assured the crowd that his son would not disappoint them, citing his impressive record as a former councillor. He also appealed to residents and stakeholders to forgive any past shortcomings, expressing joy at the massive turnout.
Finally, a member of the Biodun Coker Foundation, Sekinah Lawal, said the support shown at the event was genuine and rooted in Coker’s track record of selfless service to the community.
